I use the build-in reverse-dependency checking by the script doing the
removals: merkel (mirror): /org/ftp.debian.org/katie/melanie. Invoke it as
such:

/org/ftp.debian.org/katie/melanie -n -R kernel-source-2.6.8

Note that also this tool isn't without bugs, it gives spurious warnings with
arch-specific removals, it will warn when you remove a package but another
Provides: it so it goes well after all, and erm, it crashes when it encounters
a contrib/non-free reverse dependency. After manually patching the last issue
(trivial), it provides a good starting point.
