On further thought, depmod updates a file (modules.dep) in /lib when updating the module dependencies, so maybe it's reasonable for discover to do the same. $CRASHFILE can't be in /tmp as that may be in tmpfs, and the file is required to persist across a crash-and-reboot. Nick
