IIRC this was mainly because there was (is?) no maintainer for loop and
cryptoloop in the Linux kernel, but Jari Ruusu (loop-AES author) does a
very good job maintaining his loop crypto driver outside the tree.

I'm not disputing that device-mapper solves things more cleanly and
elegantly compared to loopback and it would be great to support them.
Regardless, at least loop-AES has some strong points compared to the
other implementations and I guess is here to stay for a while :)

My idea for partman-crypto was from the beginning to support all of
of loop-AES, dm-crypt and LUKS (see my other reply to Martin), but I
simply don't know enough about the latter two implementations to get 
them fully supported myself.
