Selecting the source of the netinstall there was a discrepancy btw the menu reporting stable test unstable and the script because debbootstrap was unable to find on the server (all italians) the testing stable unstable, seems to works if from shell i gave the command with etch, sarge or sid.

Are there any SATA configuration options in the BIOS?

Most likely it is a matter of 2.6.8/2.4.27 not supporting your SATA
chipset or at least not in the default configuration.

You might have better luck with booting the installer with 'linux26' to
pick the 2.6.8 kernel if you didn't try that already, although a number
of people have not been able to get any intel AHCI SATA controllers to
work with anything less than 2.6.10. I am not sure what SATA controller
the 915 chipset uses in a laptop.

I have seen other cases where intel SATA works perfectly in
native/enhanced mode, but not in compatibility/combined mode, which is
often the default since windows xp can't isntall without a custom cd, or
using a floppy to load a driver for the sata controller if it is in
native mode. Dell for example won't even give you an option to take the
controller out of combined mode, probably to avoid tech support calls
about how to reinstall windows on their machine if the setting is
changed.
