Any messages on VT4 or VT3 that give a clue? Did you try booting the installer with "linux26" to try the 2.6 kernel? If that does not work, try booting with "expert" and select the driver modules needed for your hardware by hand. You can also try just deselecting all modules except those needed for CD support (ide-core, generic, ide-detect, ide-cd, isofs).
