You said you used the netinst CD image. If it's the 110 mb iso, then you
should not expect much network traffic during the initial install, as
this CD contains the whole debian base system and you only need the
network to install other stuff, after the base installation.

It sounds like it may be having trouble reading some files from your CD.
There is a menu item available after it fails that you can use to try to
verify the CD contents, or you could try burning a new CD, preferably
using different CD media.

If on the other hand you're not really using the netinst CD image, but
the businesscard image, then it could indeed be a network problem.
