Hello there,
one more update on the AIC7880 case.

Well not really an update, but:

1. I have decided to overcome the problem by installing a Adaptec PCI 19160
SCSI card. I have at the same time disabled the on-board AIC7880 controller.
The 19160 has been promptly recognised and I can now install Sarge.

2. I can confirm that the AIC7880 is fully working (the on-board controller
is normally recognised by a Red Hat 8 install, or by a Debian 3.0 r3 (Woody)
using "linux" boot image on disc 2, and still now I can boot Red Hat 7
system using that controller. To me - not an expert - seems to be what it is
called a Kernel regression, in other word recognition/compatibility of that
component has been lost.

3. Will anybody (you?) look at this problem closely? Having no idea about
how the debugging process works, does it make sense to ask if there's a
provisional date for the resolution of this bug?

best regards

Alex Smali
