The install-mbr step is unnecessary. That overwrote the working boot
sector from the hd-media-image (syslinux) with the little mbr thing,
which will not know what to do next after it boots.

That's usual; the INSTALLATION-HOWTO explains that you need to copy a
d-i .iso onto the remaining space on the stick.
