Package: newt
Severity: normal

The new debian installer uses newt, and occasionally displays a
multi-select list. Based on fairly extensive user testing, the UI of
this is confusing. A measerable percentage of users do not expect to
need to hit tab to move from the select list to the OK button for the
dialog; they pick some items using space and hit enter to post the
dialog, and are confused when the enter key does nothing.

Most users work out that they have to tab to the button, but this is a
special case since all other newt widgets accept the enter key. Even a
user who is well familiar with using tab to move between widgets can be
suprised by this behavior.

We've had enough reports from users confused by this that we try to
avoid using multiselect lists. Of course now I have the need to put a
multiselect list in the default installation path, and I'm running up
against this problem. I think it would be better if hitting enter in the
multiselect list had the same behavor as selecting the OK button.

I guess this is a newt problem, since I see the same behavior in both
cdebconf using the newt frontend, and in whiptail.
