Comments/Problems:  on boot up the system requests LOGON in text mode and 
will accept root or user logon and password but I can't /don't know how to

Did you choose the desktop task when prompted for tasks to be
installed at the end of 2nd stage ?

If so, you should end up with a graphical login screen where you can
select KDE.

Otherwise, John Smith suggestion to run /etc/init.d/kdm start is
correct.

Given that this install report is a complete success report, I do as
usual with successful install report : I close the bug..:-)

This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the
installations are correct is important for the d-i team.
