Check /var/lib/dpkg/status with nano from VT2 (after partman is started).
You should have the following installed:
- - partman-md
- - mdadm-udeb
- - mdcfg
- - mdcfg-utils
- - md-modules-<kernel version>-<architecture>-di

I'm not sure you need all the above, but let us know what's missing...

For sparc, there is:
- - md-modules-2.4.27-1-sparc32-di
- - md-modules-2.4.27-1-sparc64-di
- - md-modules-2.6.8-1-sparc32-di
- - md-modules-2.6.8-1-sparc64-di
