Also, does the ppp-modules udeb do anything at all? I saw that it
adds ppp-* and pppo[ex] modules to the Ethernet device selection
list (if autodetection fails), which is probably a bug. However,
other than that, I have not seen PPP anywhere else.

During the second phase, ppp and pppoe from the base system are used
anyway, and the kernel that d-i installs includes PPP support
anyway...
