That does not seem to be entirely true. On the AMD64 box we had to add a PCI
network card since the onboard NIC has died. This card was then detected as
eth0, and not as eth2 as I expected.

Also on my P2-400 box, which I reinstalled last night, I have PCI cards for
firewire and ethernet. During this install two network cards where detected
with eth0 being the NIC and eth1 firewire, so everything went fine.
