Re: Bug#278215: Some questions about your image

On Sun, 31 Oct 2004, Joshua Kwan wrote:

Sorry! I was not aware of your previous bug, so I didn't notice the
problem. I also don't have USB ports on any of my Ultra machines so I
could not have tested this anyway.

I just kinda knew that with this USB keyboard I'm almost on my own :-)
But now let's go strictly to the business.

So, a few questions:

* on your 20040511 image, what version of kbd-chooser is being used? look
 at /var/lib/dpkg/status on the ramdisk.

I just copied the /var/lib/dpkg/status file (it's about 27 KB), and now it's in the attachment. So you can look at it yourself.

But to answer your question regarding kbd-chooser, I've found:

----- cut here -----
Package: kbd-chooser
Status: install ok installed
Version: 0.52
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.2.ds1-4), libdebconfclient0, libdebian-installer4 (>= 0.22), , console-keymaps, archdetect
Description: Detect a keyboard and select layout
installer-menu-item: 12
----- end cutting -----

* does the keyboard work at ANY stage during the install? For example,
when you get to choose your language?

After boot, on the main installer screen I can see:
"-----| [!!] Choose language |-----"
Below there are many available language options, with "en_US" selected as the default. Several options are garbled, i.e. "ar", "bg_BG", "cs_CZ", "el_GR", "he_IL" -- instead of international characters there are strings
of black boxes. Options "ja_JP" and "ko_KR" are shorter than the others by
about 15-20 characters. Black boxes still included.

On this screen I can safely press [Esc] twice to go back one level to the
"-----| [!!] Choose country |-----"
So, the USB keyboard already works, right here, right now.

After pressing [Esc] twice once again, I go back to the main menu:
"-----| [?] Debian installer main menu |-----"

The third option is:
"Select a keyboard layout"
After selecting this option I'm presented with choice:

"-----| [?] Select a keyboard layout |-----"
"Type of keyboard:"
"Sun keyboard" <--- this is selected
    "USB keyboard"

After selecting "USB keyboard" I'm presented with choice:
"-----| [!] Select a keyboard layout |-----"
From 16 options I choose a proposed one, "mac-usb-euro".
And now it works.

From now d-i runs and I can install Debian sarge in a normal way.

I know, however, that if after boot I choose a language on the main screen, the keyboard gets frozen. That is, the d-i somehow auto-selects
"Sun keyboard". And this is it.

This will get me closer to the fix. Thanks for your report and sorry for
not getting to it sooner.

Not a problem. I have some time to resolve this issue :-)

BTW, IIRC in some d-i versions before 20040511, one of the first installer questions was to choose a keyboard layout. This way I was able to select "USB keyboard" in a much more easy way.

But then, the same installer was unable to detect IDE CD-ROM...
In a later versions it was unable to load IDE drivers for HDD...
On 20040511 I was able to sub-optimally complete the installation :-)
(see bug #248855)
Later, the d-i it stopped reading USB keyboard...
And this is how we got it now.

Best regards,
Wiktor Wandachowicz
