A quick update:
The 2.6.8smp kernel installed using aptitude with no intervention from
me (a first); similarly KDE and X worked first time.  XMMS also worked
with very little configuration required.  There is room for improvement
in the sound quality (the clicking sound) and the fonts in KDE aren't
brilliant but this is the quickest I've got a working system.  The
packages aren't far behind sid and consequently sarge is a very useable
system on a G4 ;)
