I'd like to see any quik-installer messages in /var/log/syslog (tty4,
but they may have scrolled off), if I could, please.

I doubt it. quik-installer should be able to deal with a non-initrd
kernel quite happily. The problem here is that something is causing
quik-installer to exit without saying why, and I'd like to know what.
Also, I suspect you were looking for the kernel and initrd in /boot
rather than /target/boot.
