The 20040430 images are pretty old. A lot has happened since then.
Could you please try again using [1]?
If the disk is recognized, you should have /dev/disks/disk0/... while the
installer is running. /dev/hda is used after the first reboot.
If it fails again, please file an installation report [2] and, if at all
possible, include the logfiles in /var/log.

This has been observed before and will probably be fixed in a next release.
