I did just create them.  In other runs where I did not, it tells me that it found them and would I like to activate them.  I respond yes.  I get the same results.

Done.  For each lv, I get:
Incorrect metadata area header checksum
Incorrect metadata area header checksum
Volume group vg1 metadata is inconsistent
Voume group for uuid not found: <about 50 characters>

The last line is:
0 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg1" now active

As they didn't activate, I still get this.

This evening with more time, I can:
Erase the partition table on both drives.
Create all necessary partitions on just one drive.
Create volume group vg1 from the one lvm partition.
Create only one logical volume, perhaps usrlv.

At each step, I can Alt-F3 and read the log.  Perhaps I can determine which step the problems start.  Any other suggestions? How can I scan the drives for bad spots and if found, mark them inactive?
