Bug#247101: Sarge d-i beta4 installation to Dual-Opteron PC

Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: beta4 from

http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/i386/beta4/

Date: May 2nd through 3rd JST

Method: Boot off from beta4 CD. Tested 4 installs
with the same machine.
   1. expert(dmesg.2.4)
   2. expert26(dmesg.2.6)
   3. expert then install debian kernel image
2.6.5-1-386_2.6.5-4_i386.deb
   4. expert26 then manually installed kernel source
2.6.5.

Machine: DIY based on Tyan Tiger k8w
Processor: 2 Opteron 240
Memory: 2GB
Description: Primary Master: Maxtor 80GB
                     Slave: None
             Secondary Master: LG DVD-RAM
                       Slave: Yamaha CD-R/RW
             SATA0: Seagate 160GB
             SCSI MO: IOMEGA Gigamo
             USB Memory: 128MB Stick

Root Device: /dev/hda

Root Size/partition table: Currently hda is
partitioned to install 6 differnt linux in a single
partition. Also hde is configured to install 4
differnt linux in a single partitions, and 6 different
linux using 3 partitions(/, /var, /usr) each.
I am keeping many partitions in hde to test amd64
linux in different flavors. But before embarking on
the 64-bit pure or biarch(32 & 64), I would like to
find out current installation problems.
***Please make libata as an option in the coming new
kernel image because current version forces SCSI disk
implementation; thus forcing partitions up to 15 or
16.

Comments/Problems: In essence, d-i team has done an
excellent coordination work. What I can find as major
bugs can be attributed to discover(the following
1,2,3,4,5), and kernel problems(1,2,6.7).
Also the following dmesg are attached.
   1. dmesg.2.4 booted by expert (I couldn't due to
3 files attach limit, but if needed I will)
   2. dmesg.2.6.3 booted by expert26
   3. dmesg.2.6.5 booted by expert, then installed
debian k-image 2.6.5
   4. dmesg.2.6.5.custom booted by expert26, then
custom install kernel 2.6.5

Installation summary:
Unload all IDE chipset support except siimage, and
amd74xx.
	Detect network hardware manually.
Unload ide-scsi in 2.6 because it is obsolete in
2.6.x
	Install lilo not grub

Problems:
Some of them are obtained by Shift-PageUp/Down at the
start-up screen not through dmesg.
After *** my own work-around is listed. Some of them
you hate it.
1. Warning only 896MB will be used.
   Use a HIGHMEM enabled kernel.
   896MB LOWMEM available.
	*** Recompile kernel

2. Can recognize 2 CPUs, but refuse to use it.
	*** Recompile kernel

3. Starting PCMCIA services: Linux Kernel Card
Services
     options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
   cardmgr[1718]: no sockets found!
        *** Purge popularity-contest ppp pcmcia-cs
dhcp-client
	# dpkg --purge popularity-contest
	# dpkg --purge ppp pppoe pppoeconf pppconfig
	# dpkg --purge pcmcia-cs
	# dpkg --purge dhcp-client
	# rm -fr /etc/ppp
Edit discover.conf to comment out both enable
pcmcia, and enable isa

4. Skipping Module e1000. It's already loaded.
	*** Comment out e1000 at /etc/modules	Worked!

5. Detecting hardware: e1000 aic7xxx i810_audio
usb_uhci usb-uhci ehci_hcd
	...
   FATAL: Module usb_uhci not found.
Skipping usb_uhci module; assuming it is compiled
into the kernel.
   FATAL: Module usb_uhci not found.
Skipping usb-uhci module; assuming it is compiled
into the kernel.

        *** Edit /etc/discover.conf to append.
Work-around!
		skip usb_uhci
		skip usb-uhci

6. ** can't synthesize root hub events
	*** hotplug bug

7. Does not recognize SATA disk.
	*** kernel bug!
But the following debian kernel forces libata versicn
which currently emulate SCSI device; thus effectively
ignoring
partition above 16.

	Install a new kernel.
	# cd /usr/src
	# wget
http://ring.asahi-net.or.jp/archives/linux/debian/debian/pool/main/k/kernel-image-2.6.5-i386/kernel-image-2.6.5-1-386_2.6.5-4_i386.deb
	# dpkg -i kernel*.deb

	Edit /etc/modules to append siimage

Again, thank you for your effort.

Toshikazu Aiyama, Ph.D.
