I didn't mean to suggest that this was an upstream problem, only that it
wasn't an installer problem.  This may well be a bug in the Debian
gnome-session package, in whatever GNOME task/metapackage you installed,
or in gdm for not knowing that GNOME wasn't installed.  Knowing more
about what packages you selected for installation (and how) would give
us a better idea which of the above applies.
