If you are writing about the released (woody) installer, that code is
at cvs.debian.org/boot-floppies. There is a README-CVS which tells you
how to check out a copy to hack on.

But, the boot-floppies installer is obsolete. So instead, how about
exploring, and possibly contributing to, debian-installer at

http://cvs.debian.org/debian-installer
