packaged kernel won't boot

I've got an inspiron 2650 that won't boot with the default woody/sarge
kernels, although an old install of di did boot when I tried it (like 3
or 4 months ago). Currently using the xfs kernel from knoppix which
works fine (provided I give it noscsi on install), and morphix boots
cleanly as well. Attempts to use a packaged kernel fail miserably, as
lilo will boot but after it says loading linux...checking bios...I get a
blank screen and some of the keyboard indicator lights just flash until
I power it off. Any suggestions as to what I need to change in order to
get a bootable kernel on m laptop? If at all possible I would just like
to use a stock kernel, and also if it doesn't cause anything else to
break, wouldn't mind knowing that sarge will work properly when it hits
stable.

Thanks,
Rob J. Caskey
