--  INSTALL BUG  --  Severity=nuisance  --

CD1-Install of 3.0r1 glitched on a pc with
 - no floppy drive and FDC=off in CMOS-Setup
 - swap happened to be a logical volume inside an extnded part'n, and
 - that swap happened to "need" initialization

It kacked just as it was trying to initialize the swap partition, and heaved up a hairball.. "failed" with the "Rescue Floppy".

A stronger hand would have been able to Alt_F2 and phony-up an imaginary /mnt/floppy or something to satisfy this step. Not me.

Fortunately, as it was, it could go back to the stage of offering to init the swap, so I tried the two variations of that, a couple of times each, cycling each time into this same error-eddy. Eventually (phinally) went back and found a ...

--Workaround--

Just picked "Do without Swap" and it's tickety-boo. Swap can later be created, init'd and hooked-in, to get back to norbal system configs; so I'm glad the system had more than 128mB ram.

System:
--VIA epia5000 mbrd--(cool, literally & tiny)--
 SouthBridge is vt8231;
 FDC=off in CMOS-setup
 	(no flpy header ennywayz, hooray!
 	 Die floppies, die! Hard & fast & go away! )

--40gB hda PARTITIONING--
 1=primary[ 5.67g,  fat32,  win..DOH!s ]
 2=primary[ 5.67g, LnxExt2, Deb30r1 ]
 3=primary[ 5.67g,  0xEB,   BeOS ]
 4=EXTENDED[
 	  __LOGICAL1-{ 256mB, Type82_linuxSwap }
 	  __LOGICAL2-{ 24gigs, this week it's been FAT32 }
 	]

I am mulling over spinning that install again onto another hack hard disk, with an LS-120 in the mix, and see what happens, at the risk of maybe learning something.

SUGGESTION: Might be cool at that place in the install to offer to "write" that floppy stuff as a FLOPPY-IMAGE (rawrite-variety), in lieu of (or in addition to) dealing with an actual, lowly FDD and accursed floppy. 1.44mB or 2.88mB shouldn't be too "hard to hold" in the ramdisk 'til the filesystem's ready. Having such a (system-specific?) floppy-image sitting around might be handy if you can't boot into a higher run-level.

Needless to say, the customary floppy's contents, at time of need, will have gone "incontinent". Gone the way of all data ever entrusted to a removable magnetic medium: distant exotic Fluxior, the write-only planet. Once thought to be a (C)PortabowlBleckWhole(TM,R), after denials from BornerWathers and the sad passing of material witness Juck Chones, it's now suggested that it's really more like a sorta irridescent charcoal/ebony with enigmatic hints of Guinness-red kinda abyss thingy. Rumour has been sputtered about, that it was (C)reated by two chums on each coast. Asked to come to NeuJoisey to complete the project, the Californian chum said, "Nah", so .. asked to meet halfway in Kansas, the NeuJoiseyan accent came back, "shua". No other gnames gneed be gmentioned, as the wrest of the history is gnow storied. Regardless, those archives are not available at the moment, I can't remember why.
