i did find some splashimage= patches:
http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/grub/patches/grub-0.91-vga16.patch
and
http://people.redhat.com/~katzj/grub/patches/grub-0.91-splashimagehelp.patch
i was able to apt-get source grub, wget the two patches, cd to the
grub-0.91 dir, apply the two patches, and debuild w/o error.
