There's a really good chance I'm missing something here, but I don't have 
earlier mail on the thread.

Are we talking about hiding critical information from the user? Putting it in 
a log is good, and should be done. So to is showing it to the user when it 
happens.

How many times have you been deceived when a program had a problem and 
reported it via syslog() and not to your terminal? It was one of the hardest 
things I had to adapt to when I started using Linux.
