My first build stopped with:
E: root.bin is larger than root1440.bin (1479608 > 1474560)

With the minimaly modified debootstrap_0.1.16.3 (this: http://leber.de/c/dl/)
it seems to fit:
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root      1474560 Mar  3 20:10 root1440.bin
