What about "LANG=de_DE@euro date", does that work?

For me, locale-gen says:

Generating locales...
  en_US.ISO-8859-1... done
  en_US.UTF-8... done
  en_GB.ISO-8859-1... done
  en_GB.UTF-8... done

  de_DE.ISO-8859-1... done
Generation complete.

(I've no idea what all the complaints about the french one are in aid
of.)
