modprobe smc-ultra only succeeds in PnP mode

Hello everyone,

I can get my SMC EtherEZ ISA network card only to work in PnP mode, not with set io
and irq parameters. This seems strange since Slackware 7.0 with aic7xxx Linux kernel
2.2.13 recognized the nic without a hitch. I would appreciate help and
clarification to resolve this mystery.

My computer: 486DX/100 with AMD586 CPU, 32 MB RAM, Adaptec 2842VL SCSI adapter with
floppy controller, 4 x 500MB Fujitsu HDD, Sony CDU-76S SCSI CDROM, 3-1/2" floppy
drive, SMC EtherEZ 16-bit ISA network card model 8416BT.
