Excellent -- The first test I would like to see is the following -- can you
mount the boot floppies on a working system and make the following changes to
the rescue.bin image:

    1) change the file /etc/inittab to remove the "null" at the
	beginning of the line running rcS
    2) Change /etc/init.d/rcS so that the first line reads 
	#!/bin/sh -x

The umount the rescue image, and try again.  Changing things
the way will avoid all the pain of recompiling everything.
