Compact install fails on my hardware

Hi,

SYMPTOM: booting (compact) rescue disk works to boot prompt.
Pressing return, the next screen is displayed but
	loses sync, nothing readable.

My HARDWARE: (collection of orphaned equip from other machines)
Video: PCI - Mirage Illusionist 3D card - 32MB (Fixed Freq)
Motherboard: EPoX EP-MVP3G2 (ATX) VIA MVP3 AGP chipset
	  CPU: AMD K6-2/500Mhz
	  RAM: 192 MB
Drives: (on both channels of IDE) 20GB Maxtor, Creative 24x CD-ROM
	  Floppy: 3.5 on /dev/fd0
	  Network card
	  Soundblaster audio card
ISA card with SCSI and single HP CD-writer attached

Is there a way to force VGA display? (I see mono in help, but
not resolution.) 'Course I'm only guessing this would help...

I'm heading off to find more on video card from vendor and
review debian install notes on web.

	Any help appreciated!

NOTE: I'm setting this up dual-boot, win98se is running great
on machine, already. (no disparaging comments, please ;-)

Regards,
Stephen
