Potato network card modules setup broken?

Hello,
I'm not sure which list this should go on. I
downloaded the netinstcd-2.2.8-2000-03-09-1.iso image
and attempted to install it. It would not allow me to
configure the ne.o module for my linksys ether16 (irg
4, io address 0x300) network card.
Due to the age of this iso image, I downloaded an
unofficial potatato disk 1 iso image from
http://debian.bilow.com/debian-cdimage/
and attempted to install from it. Again, I could not
get the module to load. For past linux installations
I've only needed to supply the io address of 0x300 as
a module parameter but this would not work on either
the netinst cd or the unofficial potato cd.
When entering the module parameters here is the
message I recieved:

Note: /target /etc/modules.conf is more recent then
/lib/modules/2.2.15/modules.dep
/lib/modules/2.2.15/net/ne.o: init_module: Device or
resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module
parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.15/net/ne.o: insmod ne failed
Installation failed.

If I open another virtual terminal in the setup and
do:
cd /lib/modules/2.2.15/net
insmod -v ne.o io=0x300
I receive:
ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_open
ne.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init
ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt
ne.o: unresolved symbol NS8390_init
ne.o: unresolved symbol ei_close

If I attempt to load the 8390 module and then the Ne
module from the setup screen I can not load my ether
card.
But if I continue with the installation and let the
computer reboot, switch over to a virtual console and
manually load the 8390 and Ne modules and rerun
networking from init.d I can successfully load the
card and ping other computers. I can also load the
modules w/o problem from another vc during the module
configuration part.

IMHO their is something wrong with how the setup
program attempts to load the ne module. Also it would
be helpful if the 8390 module had a description.
Please reply to dlfg_68@yahoo.com as I'm not
subscribed to either list. Thanks for reading
