Subject: installation problem with cm206 cdrom
Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 05:08:17 PST
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Package: base-config
Version: 2.1

I'm not sure about the version number. I couldn't find it in the cd. I've
dowloaded debian (again) yesterday. It is 'Debian GNU/Linux slink (2.1_r4)
1/4 main binary-i386 section 1 SAM19991218' according to the readme.1st file
on the cd.
I'm installing debian from the two floppies I've created with the cd-rom.
When I partition my hard-disk it says it has 1057 cylinders. Is this
allright? I have changed it to 1024, but I still get problems with the
cd-rom afterwards. Anyway, I make a 456.26MB (bootable)linux partition
(hda1) and a 64MB swap partition (hda2). Then I scan my partions for bad
blocks. ...
When in 'Configure Device Driver Modules' I choose 'cdrom', 'cm206',
'install' and I write 'cm206=0x340,10' when it asks me to enter command-line
arguments. I'm pretty sure those are right, because they showed up when i
used to start my computer in ms-dos. When the debian-cd is in the cd-rom
drive I get this message:

'Installing module cm206. If the device isn't there, or isn't configured
correctly, this could cause your system to pause for up to a minute.

eval: 1: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution

script: cd /dev && rm -f cdrom && ln -s cm206cd cdrom
eval: 1: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution

Installation succeeded.

Please press ENTER when you are ready to continue.'

When I have to choose the medium I will use to install the base system, I
choose 'cdrom', 'propietary', 'exit.
Then I see 'Please place the Debian CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.' I do that
and I get 'The CD-ROM was not mounted succesfully.'

To solve this I press alt-F2, 'enter' and I type 'mknod /dev/cm206cd b 32
0'.
I go back to setup (alt-F1) and I choose to install the base system from the
cd-rom. Then I get the select cdrom modules menu. Ichoose ?exit?. The path
where debian resides is /debian. I?m installing the base system from
/instmnt/debian/dists/slink/main/disks-i386/current.
Then I get ?The base system is being extracted?? and after that :
?File error!

There was a problem extracting the Base System from
/instmnt/debian/dists/slink/main/disks-i386/current/base2_1.tgz?

I usually get this message after 10 or 15 seconds, when there seems to be a
lot of hard-disk activity.

What should I do? I had no problem with the cd-rom drive in windows. I've
got a 486DX4 100Hz.
Someone told me the linux root partition should not exceed the 1024th
cilinder. It seems that it isn't exceeding it on my system.

At first, I thought I didn't burn the cd-rom correctly. That's why I've
downloaded debian again. I've burned in mode 1 and using iso9660 with easy
cd-creator 3.5c.
I've tried to install debian with floppy drives (which i made with the first
cd: debian 2.1 r2), but i got a md5sum-error with the second diskette
containing the base-system.
I've managed to install debian from a dos-partition, though. But I don't
know how to merge that dos-partition with my linux partition. I mean, I only
want a swap and a linux-partition.
could someone help me out?
greetings,
-geoff
