Sorry to confuse things.  

I'm not sure that the problem's with `modconf', as that seems to work fine
once the system has loaded all the packages from the CD.  Maybe the version
of `modconf' in the base-floppies is out of date, although I couldn't find a
version number.

I notice that although my CDs are only a week old, I'm already a version
behind with the boot-floppies, so you might have fixed this already.

If I have time, I'll download them afresh, and try them again, to see
whether you've already fixed this problem.
