broken things with 2.2.6

Things broke in 2.2.6 -- would be great if someone could look into
and help fix these:

   net-feching kernel and drivers is broke
         -- seems to hang after getting the stuff...

   nfs install is broke (?)  (not yet confirmed)

   many DHCP problems, and dhcp/pcmcia problems -- seems to be completely
     broken with an err msg scribbling on dbootstrap
         -- dhcp support shouldn't be the default or should remain the default?

   logging in as root after reboot seems to be broken

   people reported network problems (i.e., network not started,
      hostname not set, domainname not set, /etc/hosts not populated)
