prettyify the output quite a bit; some modularity works on the scripts
too. Set 'debug' or 'verbose' variables to bring back verboseness.
Note that common.sh has new 'warn', 'error', 'info', and 'debug'
funcitons for different levels of messages to users. All this stuff
was tested pretty well on i386 so should work just as before.
