I took the responsability for this... task :-) late in the slink release 
process. The files were still those from hamm and, worse, there was no 
automatic checking of their consistency. And they didn't work on non-i386, 
which I regard as an important bug.

I did not work on it since slink was released. I'll be happy to let someone 
else take it.

Before hamm, such profiles were loudly requested by newbies: with RedHat, you 
could choose such profiles, with Debian, you had to navigate through dselect. 
With the 2200 packages of slink, they are certainly not useless!
