I guess I was thinking of the stuff at

Check the BIOS configuration in particular. Look at the Linux
Hardware HOWTO or the other Linux/BIOS resources at the LDP pages. I
would suggest tweaking with BIOS settings to get it to work. Turn of
BIOS ROM shadow in RAM, for instance.
