I am not sure your last statement is not true, the last parameter of
their database is the linux driver name (but they did not make
provisions for the IO and DMA stuff).

 Anyway I like your format better, and it looks more manageable that
the Redhat databases in misc/install/pci-probing.

Maybe a small script that would optionally extend update-modules to
creates the right /etc/modules, /etc/conf.modules for the current
machine would be a very useful contribution, (using the database you
proposed and /proc/bus/pci/0). For ISA PNP, the IRQ and port
allocation problem maybe a difficult one.
