They handicapped the Samba server by setting a flag that requires several times as many system calls on the server than it would otherwise need. The Apache server was handicapped by a shortage of file handles. Apparently they didn't understand this. Even my lowly Pentium 120 is capable of saturating a T1 line with its Apache server, while still giving me lots of CPU left over for running X and applications. Thanks Bruce
