Graphical install disks: the saga continues
As some of you might remember, I'm working on writing some
experimental GUI-based install disks for an unspecified upcoming
Debian release, perhaps potato.
In the last chapter of this story, I had begun work on a 16-color
EGA/VGA framebuffer driver for kernel 2.2. Well, there is now a
pretty good driver out there. I still have a few things planned, but
it works.
Today I began work on a simple graphics library for use with the
framebuffer driver. So far, it draws lines, filled rectangles, and
proportional text in any small-to-medium size font generated from an X
Window System .bdf file. I'm calling it BOGL, for Ben's Own Graphics
Library. Right now, it is 17K when compiled & stripped, including a
test routine and a 12-point Times font, so it is definitely possible
to fit on a boot disk. I'm happy with these results.
Just thought some people might be interested in a status report on
this. If you want more details, or the code that I have written, you
can contact me directly or on this list.
