Bug#31558: resc1440 won't add active swap to fstab

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 2.0.10_1998-07-21
Severity: critical

I have a 4MB system. Here is what I did:

1. default boot from lowmem.bin.

2. ... initialize swap partition and begin swapping ...

3. Insert resc1440.bin diskette into my only floppy drive
and have a root filesystem put into tiny
    MINIX partition.

4. Exit from the install program running off lowmem.bin, while
resc1440.bin is still in the drive.

At this point, I am not sure what is controlling my computer, but when
I am asked to configure a swap partition. I suggest the preconfigured
swap partition. The program complains that it cannot initialize the
swap partition because it is already active. The only way to proceed
is to not initialize swap, which it warns me about sternly. There is
no option to create an fstab entry for the already active swap partition.

However, on reboot, there is not enough memory for the system to boot
up. Fortunately, I was able to boot an alternate partition and add a
swap entry in /etc/fstab. However... I think that either the resc1440
installation procedure should be willing to create an fstab entry for
an already active swap partition, or, lowmem.bin should somehow
accomodate the installation's expectation that no swap will be active.

Also, the rescue disk is unable to boot the MINIX partition (it mounts
the partition as root but hangs up later.) Is that expected? It would
have been an extra safety hatch.

If this is fixed, maybe the new images should be available in
hamm/disks-i386 ?

Thanks,
