Bug#31265: bug

I have found the cause of the bug: it is in the detection of the third
harddisk controller. The last text on the screen is:

hde: probing (...)

So I recompiled the kernel (2.0.34) on my other pc, with settings
suitable for a bootdisk and a 386SX, but in "ide.h", I set the value of
the maximum amount of harddisk controllers to look for (it's a constant,
i dont remember its name) to 2 instead of 4. It worked, the system booted
up fine afterwards and after a few further recompiles of the kernel (I
forgot some settings like enable loop device and NFS, needed to install
debian) I successfully installed Debian 2.

So i think the problem must be in the probing for hde, probably a system
port is addressed in such a way that it makes my system reboot. That may
be due to some crazy chip in a corner of my motherboard, it's an old pc
so who knows.
Anyway I hope this information is useful to you all, and also thanks for
the help of course.

regards,
Tom Blauwendraat
