OpenLDAP for AMD64

I've been hit by the "Too many open files" problem explained in #378261
on an AMD64 machine running Lenny.
I guess this bug has been overlooked in #378261 (which is closed, you
might have guessed) because most people use it with libnss-ldap
installed on the same machine, and this one depends upon package nscd,
which probably does its job of limiting actual accesses to slapd.

Though, I'm raising the problem here because there is a backport of
slapd, but not for AMD64, probably so because the test suite fails to
execute during build (I tried myself).

May I get any help from here?
