The only things needed to upgrade are the nwflash kernel module, and
the flashwrite executable (and glibc). It should work fine from a
singleuser or shell-only boot.
Alternatively you may want to network boot the machine. There are a
couple of NFS-based rescue tools (~mmontour comes to mind) or you can
even use the "base" Dm disk image.
