ASUS A8V Deluxe OK, but for audio

I just installed an Athlon64 on a M/B "ASUS A8V Deluxe" and I want to
report that (using kernel 2.6.11-1-k7 ) audio and networking are
working fine (and they where configured automatically by hotplug/udev)

whereas I did not find a way to load the cpufreq monitor ; but I
enabled Cool-n-quiet in the BIOS and it is managing the CPU since I
see that the fan is slowing down when I do not overuse the system

instead when I tried to run any of the two kernels
2.6.8-11-amd64-k8 or  2.6.8-11-amd64-generic
I could not use the audio;
 any program trying to use the audio would trigger a lot of lines such as:
 ioctl32(amixer:4199): Unknown cmd fd(3) cmd(80045500){00} arg(ffffd92c) on /dev/snd/controlC0
in the kernel log
