Startup of fluxbox extremely slow

I switched from i386 to amd64 (keeping the old system as chroot), both
running sarge. The system is really fast, only fluxbox (which I use from
time to time) hangs on startup or when switching the style. CPU of
XFree86 is almost 100% in this case. After startup (~ 30sec.) anything
runs as usual, fluxbox being more responsive than gnome, my usual
environment.

Another oddity, maybe related: In some applications (I can reproduce
this with dvdrip) fixed coloured fonts on white background are sort of
washed out, disppearing and reappearing when they are redisplayed.
