Because NVIDIA's installer doesn't work on our 64bit system.  Some of the 
directory locations are different, and their installer gets confused.  Use 
the nvidia-* debian packages instead.  Install them with apt, and build your 
NVIDIA module with module-assistant (or kernel-package if you ever decide to 
start building your own kernels - it can build your external modules when it 
builds the kernel).
