No, since then people couldn't update anymore. It takes one release to
get the support for it into stable and another release to actually use
it.

Well maybe you could make it so stable (sarge) dpkg/apt can cope with
it already and then sarge+1 could use it, which would be in 2-3 years.

So it still sucks.
