Not so.  Despite my dislike of emerge based on its reduced efficiency
from the dpkg-* and apt-* tools, I'm getting most of what I need (open
source data analysis environment) working.

You can be academic and argue that it isn't aesthetically the right
solution or on the right track, but from a pragmatic standpoint, it is
at least 50% there (i.e. working, vs. working in a pretty fashion).
