Well, I had problems with 2.4.20 as well. amiboot loads the kernel and then
the kernel panics with some interrupt related stuff. I tried kernel-image as
well building my own kernel from kernel-source with m68k patches applied. 
And IIRC there were some warnings/errors at the end of make bzImage, but
can't say now whether this was for 2.4.21 or 2.4.20...
